First Time at Whistler Bike Park: How the Lifts and Gondolas Work

If you’ve never ridden Whistler before, the first thing that hits you isn’t the trails — it’s the scale of the place. Everything is bigger than most bike parks and if you’ve come from riding in the UK it can feel a little confusing at first.

When I arrived at Whistler Bike Park I remember standing there thinking right… how exactly does this all work?

Where do you put your bike on the lift?
Which gondola takes bikes?
And where do you wash the bike afterwards?

So while I was there I filmed a quick video showing the basics, because once you understand the system the whole place makes a lot more sense.

Female mountain biker at the Top of the World trail in Whistler Bike Park, Canada

Watch the video

What I cover in the video

In this video I walk through a few of the practical things that can catch people out the first time they ride Whistler.

  • Practising putting the bike on the lift

  • Riding the Fitzsimmons lift

  • Using the Creekside gondola with bikes

  • How the main Whistler gondola works

  • Understanding the trail grading in Canada

  • Where most hotels store bikes

  • Bike wash stations in the park

It’s nothing complicated, but these are the little things that make your first day a lot smoother.

First impressions of Whistler

Whistler is honestly one of those places every mountain biker should experience at least once. The trail network is huge, the lift system runs incredibly smoothly and the whole town is set up for riding.

But it can feel slightly overwhelming when you first arrive, especially if you’re used to smaller bike parks.

Once you’ve loaded your bike onto the lifts a couple of times though, it quickly becomes second nature.

Tips for your first day at Whistler

  • Start on the Fitzsimmons zone

  • Get comfortable loading your bike on the lift

  • Don’t underestimate braking bumps

Part two coming soon

This video is part one of my Whistler series.

In the next one I’ll be sharing some of the places I found for food, coffee and post-ride refuelling around Whistler, which is almost as important as the riding itself.

If you're planning a trip to Whistler Bike Park and have any questions, drop them in the comments on the video and I’ll try to help.

Mountain Biking Essentials: Your Ultimate Starter Kit Guide

Embarking on your mountain biking journey is an exciting adventure, but having the right gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable ride. Today we'll explore the must-have basic kit for beginners. One of the most asked questions I get from beginners is what kit I need to start out. So let's talk about it. We will take for granted you already have the bike as that is a very big part of this.

When you start out you do not need to spend a fortune on kit yes you can if you want to but I am going to share my pick with you on what I would buy if I was starting out.

Helmet
Safety first! A properly fitting helmet is essential for protecting your head in case of falls. Endura is my brand of choice and has an extensive range of mountain bike helmets something to suit all budgets. They offers a range of lightweight and durable helmets with adjustable fittings for maximum comfort and protection on the trails. They also look great good too.

Jersey and Shorts
Investing in moisture-wicking jerseys and padded shorts is key for comfort during long rides. Endura's cycling jerseys feature breathable fabrics and strategic ventilation to keep you cool and dry, while their padded shorts provide cushioning and support for extended hours in the saddle.

Gloves
Protect your hands from vibrations, cold and blisters with a pair of cycling gloves. A good set of mountain biking gloves offers excellent grip and shock absorption, enhancing your control and confidence on rough terrain while providing added protection in case of falls. At this time of year, the right pair of gloves will make or break a ride, You have to invest in good winter gloves to keep your hands warm.

Shoes
Proper footwear is essential for getting the most efficient pedalling and optimal power transfer. I know that should a bit much at this stage but belive me you will care about this when you are on the trail.

Invest in a pair of mountain biking shoes with stiff soles for stability and traction, and choose compatible pedals that suit your riding style. Whether you start out on flat pedals or clips you need a good pair of shoes which will keep you in contact with the pedals.

Knee Pads
You should Invest in quality knee pads they are in my opinion essential for any mountain biker, providing crucial protection against impacts and abrasions during rides. Whether you're tackling technical trails or enjoying leisurely rides, knee pads offer peace of mind and confidence to push your limits. With innovative designs and advanced materials, knee pads provide optimal comfort, flexibility, and breathability without compromising on safety.

Hydration
Stay hydrated on the go with a water bottle or backpack. We all know the benefit of drinking when out doing exercise mountain biking is no different to any form of exercise.

Tools and Repair Kit
Be prepared for mechanical issues with a basic toolkit and repair kit. Pack essentials such as a multi-tool, tire levers, spare tubes, and a mini-pump to handle common maintenance tasks and minor repairs on the trail.

Equipping yourself with the right gear is essential for a safe and enjoyable mountain biking ride.  So gear up, hit the trails, and let the adventure begin! But if you are on a budget don't forget to check out places like Vinted for second and new bargains. Vinted can be a complete gold mind for the kit.

Bike safety
Adding a GPS bike tracker to your bike or frame is a really good way to give you peace of mind that your bike is safe secure and protected from theft. It is one of the most underrated and effective ways to protect your bike from the worst happening. No point in having all the right kit and no bike so prefect the most important bit of kit you need for mountain biking with a good tracker.

Mastering Mountain Biking: A Beginner's Guide to Level Up Your Trail Skills

Fancy starting mountain biking? Its an exciting journey. Welcome to a world of adrenaline, scenic trails, and the thrill of conquering nature on two wheels. Whether you're a complete newbie or looking to up your game, this guide is packed with useful tips to help you master the art of mountain biking and take your skills to new heights.

1. Gear Up for Success:

Investing in the right gear is like having a trusty sidekick on the trails. Start with a well-fitted helmet, a reliable bike, and sturdy footwear. As you progress, consider upgrades to enhance your biking experience. You don't have to start out with the most expansive or gnarly gear. As long as you can hit the trails safely then you are good to go.

2. Embrace the Learning Curve:

Every trail is a classroom, and every ride is a lesson. Don't be discouraged by initial challenges. Embrace the learning curve, knowing that each obstacle is an opportunity to improve. There will be up and down and I don't just mean the trails themself. Learning any new skill has peaks and troffs and it is perfectly normal to struggle during your learning curve.

3. Develop Proper Riding Posture:

Maintaining the correct riding posture is key to stability and control. Keep your elbows slightly bent, knees flexed, and eyes focused on the trail ahead. This position allows for better manoeuvrability and absorbs shocks from uneven terrain. It is always good to get the basics honed in right from the start.

4. Master the Basics:

Start with fundamental techniques like braking, shifting gears, and balancing. Practice these skills in a controlled environment before hitting more challenging trails. Building a strong foundation will boost your confidence. It is ok to take it slow and really get to know your bike before hitting hard trails. You need to feel confident and relaxed on your bike.

5. Choose the Right Trail:

Opt for beginner-friendly trails initially. Green trails often provide a smoother introduction, allowing you to gradually build your skills and progress to more challenging routes as you gain experience.

6. Conquer Climbs with Confidence:

Climbing hills is an inevitable part of mountain biking. Shift to a lower gear, maintain a steady pace, and distribute your weight evenly to the front and rear wheels. Celebrate each successful climb as a personal victory. But you don't have to stay on the bike it is more than ok if you need to get off your bike and push uphill we all did this when starting out. Dame we all do this now and again now. There is no shame you only do the uphill for the fun of the down anyway.

7. Descend Like a Pro:

Descending can be thrilling but requires skill. Shift your weight to the back of the bike, keep a loose grip on the handlebars, and let the bike move beneath you. Choose your line wisely, and gradually increase your speed as confidence grows. You got this.

8. Brake Smartly:

Effective braking is crucial. Use both front and rear brakes, but be cautious not to lock them up. Practice controlled braking to maintain stability, especially on downhill sections.

9. Look Where You Want to Go:

Maintain an active gaze on the trail ahead. Head up elbows out eyes on the trail.  Your bike follows your eyes, so focus on the path you want to take, not the obstacles you want to avoid. This simple technique enhances your control and helps you navigate with precision.

10. Join a Community:

Connect with fellow mountain bikers through local clubs or online communities. Shared experiences, advice, and group rides can accelerate your learning and introduce you to new trails. Making friends that bike will help you improve and learn new skills.

Embarking on the mountain biking journey can be scary at first and there is a lot of learning to be done but with practice and a smile on your face you will have fun and enjoy the outdoors from a new perspective.

Navigating the Trails: A Brit's Guide to Mountain Biking Etiquette

As mountain bikers, we are all out on the trails for one thing to ride our bikes and have fun right? But if you are new to mountain biking or just need a refresher there are unwritten rules of the tails. We are fortunate to live in a country littered with the world's best mountain biking. However, some trails are shared with other outdoor enthusiasts or other bikers. Everyone rides at their own speed and not everyone cares about a PR or Strava segmement. There are easy-to-follow basic trail etiquette that mountain bikers should follow for safe and happy riding.

1. Greetings Are Essential
Start your trail experience with a smile and a friendly "hello" to fellow bikers and hikers. A warm greeting sets a positive tone for the ride. There is nothing wrong with saying Hi and being friendly we all have the same hobby.

2. Overtaking
When overtaking pedestrians or fellow cyclists, announce your presence with a polite "on your left." It's a simple and easy courtesy that goes a long way. Letting people know you are there is key.

3. Hikers are allowed to be there
Uphill or downhill, hikers have the right to use the path. Slow down, give a friendly nod, and ensure they feel comfortable as you pass. Or get off and walk we share the outdoors.

4. Horses
Horse riders often use fire roads and can't always see you coming. Be patient and let the rider know you are there. It is not safe for you or them to scare a horse.

5. Leave No Trace
Mother Nature deserves our utmost respect. Do not leave a trace if you took it with you take it back.

6. Mind Your Speed
It's not a race, well, not always. Adjust your speed to the trail conditions and fellow riders. A friendly 'Rider may be helpful if someone doesn't know you are coming up behind them.

7. Traildog and dogs in general
Trail dog are the best. But make sure you are respectful when out with your furry friend. making sure they have good recall and listen to you is a must.
Also when exiting trails remember there may be dog walks and dogs of lead.

8. Repair and Prepare
Be self-sufficient. Carry essentials like a pump, tools, and a spare tube. If you see a fellow biker in distress, offer a hand. Trail camaraderie is a beautiful thing.

9. Maps
Always have access to the map if you don't know the trail. Trailfork and Strava are good for navigating your way around trails.

10. Respect Trail Closures
Sometimes trails need a breather too. Respect closures and diversions – it's a small sacrifice for the greater good of the trail system. You don't know why they are closed there could be a tree down or an unsafe feature. The trial builders put in a lot of work so respect them.

11. Embrace Group Harmony
Riding in a group? Ensure everyone is on board with the chosen route and pace. Communication is key to a fun group ride. ride at a good pace for everyone,. No one wants beasted up a hill.

12. Celebrate Achievements
Congratulate fellow riders on conquering a tough climb, a hard feature or a new route.

We are so lucky to have a great network of trails and bike parks in the UK being nice to fellow riders out enjoying them is just a good thing to do for the bigger mountain biking communities.

Building Confidence to Tackle Mountain Bike trails with Roots Like a Pro

if you are reading this you already have the mountain biking bug? like me, you are hooked on the wonderful world of MTB.  The wind and rain on your face, the trail beneath your tyres, and oh no there a, a  massive slippery root ahead! If you've ever been taken by surprise by a tangle of roots on your trail, you know they can be a bit tricky and some people are really scared to ride over them.  But fear not! I am here to show you how to build confidence and conquer those pesky roots in no time.

1. See it, Believe it, think it?

This will sound cheesy bit bear with me here Before going back to the trail you struggled on. even try visualizing a successful run. Picture yourself riding and navigating those roots with confidence, agility and skill. Visualization is a powerful tool that many professional athletes use. So grab a cup of coffee, close your eyes, and see yourself dominating those roots or be like me I like to do it just as I fall asleep Goon, give it a go.

2. Gear Up and Warm-Up

Get the right kit. Your kit is really important. You all know I rate all Endura Products so I recommend getting at least a good helmet knee pads gloves and glasses. Don't underestimate the power of the right kit and a good warm-up. I always like to start on an easy trail to get me back in the riding frame of mind before hitting the harder stuff.

Ensure you have a well-maintained bike with appropriate tyre pressure for the conditions and suspension setup. I mean I could not have a better set you on either of my Hope Tech bikes.

3. Know Your Line

When you're out on the trail,  Look ahead you need to be planning your line in advance. As you approach a rooty section, look for the smoothest line - often, this means aiming for gaps between the roots. or of course, you might need to go over roots, and that's okay too. The key is to anticipate and stay in control.

4. Loosen Up!

Now here's the fun part! You're about to tackle those roots. Get into a neutral riding position and keep your weight centred. Loosen your grip a little and let your bike move beneath you - think of it like dancing with your bike over the roots. You lead, and the bike follows! This is where Hope Tech breaks shine they have the perfect about of modulation to help you get over the roots whilst having the power to stop you too.

5. Keep the Momentum

It's tempting to hit the brakes when faced with an obstacle,  and roots can be scary but with roots, momentum is your friend. Keep pedalling and maintain a steady speed. Remember, you have more control when you're moving forward.

6. Practice, Practice, Practice

And finally, the best way to build confidence is through practice. Start with smaller, less intimidating roots in dry conditions and work your way up.  helping your gain confidence and skills. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small, and remember that every rider has been exactly where you are now. we all had to learn from the start just like you are.

With these tips, I hope this gives you the confidence to move forward and start tackling the scary roots section and building confidence.

You got this.

Essential Tips for Bouncing Back After a Mountain Bike Crash

We all know that mountain biking is a thrilling yet challenging sport and adventure, and it comes with its fair share of offs, bumps and bruises. If you've recently had a tumble, big or small don't worry you're not alone. We all have them if you're not filing you're not trying, right?

Here's a helpful guide to help you dust yourself off, pick up your bike, after you have checked it right?  and get back on the trail with confidence and with less fear.

First Things First - Addressing the Ouchies

After a crash, it's important to check yourself for injuries. This might be a bit obvious, but hey, adrenaline can sometimes make us forget the basics! Do a head-to-toe scan to ensure you're okay. If you're in doubt or it's more than just a scrape, always seek medical advice.  Concussions are not a joke remember, even minor injuries need proper care. Clean any cuts and use a good antiseptic to ward off any potential infection.

Concussions are a big risk with mountain biking taking care of your brain is paramount if you think you might have one seek medical attention straight away. Just look at our top-performing athletes Concussions can be serious so take it seriously.

Get Back On (When You're Ready)

Biking is all about balance, both physically and mentally. After a crash, it's essential to get back on your bike when you're ready no rush, no pressure. Start off with an easy green or blue trail or even a gravel ride. You don't have to conquer the most challenging terrain right away. The goal is to regain your confidence, bit by bit. So take it easy.

Take it as a Learning Curve

Hey, even the best riders have had their share of spills! Just pop on the downhill and you will see some epic crashes. Even Pros eat dirt just like us. Take this opportunity to learn from what happened. Was it a sharp turn you misjudged? Or maybe a lack of concentration?  slippy root?  handling a jump wrong?
Whatever it was, identifying the cause can help you prevent similar situations in the future. Remember, every fall teaches us something new.

Equip Yourself

Crashes can sometimes happen because of a lack of proper equipment. Make sure your helmet is up to standard and that your bike is in good working order.  Wear knee pads gloves and a helmet as a minimum. If your crash was due to mechanical failure, rectify it before getting back on the saddle. Dont do a me and check your bike before you get on it. I forgot last year and ended up 6 miles from the car with no brake pads. This was 100% my fault and it was a hard lesson to learn on the 6-mile pushback.

Investing in quality safety gear and maintaining your bike is not just sensible - it’s a crucial part of your biking journey. I recommend Endura for all your kit. They are the best around.

Stay Positive

Keeping your spirits up after a crash is just as important as physical healing. Surround yourself with supportive mates, share your experiences (the good, the bad, the ugly and the funny!), and remember to keep your sense of humour. Laughter is, after all, the best medicine!

Mindful Riding

After a crash, it's important to focus on mindful riding. Be aware of your body, your movements, and the trail ahead. Don’t zone out maintaining concentration is the key to confidence on the trails. Remember, riding is not just about speed, but also about being in control of your bike and the environment and gauging the trail ahead.

Seek Support

Consider joining a mountain biking group or community if you haven’t already. They can provide great support, tips, and camaraderie. You'll learn from their experiences and build your confidence faster.

Mountain biking is the best adventure filled with highs, lows, and everything in between. A crash might knock you down, but it won't keep you down. So, put on that helmet, and check your brakes, I, of course, recommend Hope Tech for brakes and get ready to ride the trails with renewed vigour and confidence. After all, it's the bumps along the way that make the ride worth it!

Mountain biking in Tignes France all you need to know before you go.

After a lot of options were debated about where to travel to this year, we decided to head to Tignes in the French Alps. I tried to do as much research about mountain biking in Tignes as I could and to be honest there was so little information about it that I thought I would share my trip with you all.

First off I found out about the Mytignes card if you are staying in one of the official partner hotels in Tignes you get this card for free. This gives you access to a range of activities including and most importantly mountain biking. But also the big swimming pool all the La Lac water sports etc but mostly mountain biking. This is after all that we were going for. I am riding my Hope Tech HB130 and fully kitted by The best biking kit on the market Endura. Super Lucky to be an ambassador for both brands.

Hotels

First I will be honest with you throughout this post. It was hard work to find a hotel in Tignes it was not as simple as I am used to that is for sure. We found a few good deals and booked Résidence Inter-Résidences Pierre and it was lucky we did. This is in the Val Claret area of Tignes.

This hotel is a typical ski part hotel with one main living room that has a little kitchen area. With two hobs, a microwave, fridge, and a dishwasher. This had room to sleep 4 with two in a bunk bed and a little bath with a shower overhead. This is important as we could not find the information anywhere it was not apparent if we had a shower. Our room had a balcony where the bikes could be stored. It also had a swimming pool and sauna. That makes it sound super posh but it was an average hotel. Nice enough for two bikers and lots of biking kit. It also has free parking across the road.

We later found out that our second choice of a hotel does not let bikes in your room. Hence why I said it was lucky we booked this one. Defo check you can take bikes to your hotel before booking.

The biking
First things first I must say there are so many trails here it is incredible and all included in MyTignes card or 16 Euros your a day.  Under MyTignes card, you have access to 160km of trails. Ranging from green to black and purple. There are specialised Ebike trails too. They class some trails as enduro and some downhill. I will be focusing on the trails we did and spent most of our time on.

I need to mention here do not book the last week of uplift. They shut all but the Toviere gondola and the whole village it would seem. After the 28th very very little was open and there was no information anywhere about this. Anyways back to it.

There are two main gondolas and three chair lifts.

Here is a rundown of what grades are off which gondola. First I need to mention the difference between the UK and Tignes. On a green trail, there can be big jump options in Tignes take a run down every trail before committing to anything. There are massive gap jumps on routes you would not expect here in the UK. Dont worry there are chicken lines. They are just options but sometimes they look ok but are big jumps and gaps. So ride with caution people.

From Tignes La Lac

Palafour chair lift which is accessed from right beside the main village. This seemed to be where we saw the most families and beginners. This chair lift is the only front wheel scoop you put your bike on yourself here.

This has the following trails
  •  Green smoothie -super fun for every levels.
  •  Blue jump- around fun fun fun
  •  Red Red hot - a bit techier with lots of loose rocks and a couple little drops
  • Purple Palaf which appeared to be a black trail to us here in the UK - Epic techy step-sided rocky with some incredible step berms

These all return you back to the Palafour chair lift.

There are also a couple of extras from this chairlift.
  • Blue Tarte A Lognan is a great blue which ends in Val Claret so perfect to end on if you are staying over in Val Claret. It does have step berms and some loose rock sections.
  • Red Called Rocky trail. This trail is epic and would be black here but I do not say this lightly this has a very very long push over a walker's trail to get back to the chair lift. If we had more time I would have loved to do this again but the pushback was a lot and I am a fit person. it was very steep and not bikeable
  • Black SV Salon de La Vache this one takes you to Tignes Les Boisse where you need to get a bus uplift back so we didn't do this as it would have taken a lot of time out of the day.

Toviere gondola (La Lac)

This is a smaller gondola which fits two bikes and bikers in it.

From here you have the following trails that take you back to the bottom of the gondola
  • Black Karmasutra is a great black trail with techy features including jumps steep sections and techy corners and rock
  • Black Gypsy accessed via a blue called gun powder -one step techy corner with rock overhang techy
  • Black Black metal accessed via gun powder further down good black with techy steep sides and big steep berms
  • Black Moustache The techiest trail here with severe steep sides and no get-off points, not for the faint-hearted

Other trails can be accessed but you need to ride back (only about 5 minutes mostly downhill) over to La Lac or head back up Tufs chairlift
  • Blue Gun powder big fun berms
  • Blue Funky Tufs super fast and flowy blue has small red option.
  • Red Kangooride this one is just a tighter version of the blues.
A trail that takes you to Val d Isere from Toviere and Tufs
  • Blue Borsattack fun blue which links into Val blue.
From Val Claret

Tufs Chairlift here your bike is put on the carrier by the chairlift operators.

From here the trails go back to the bottom of the chair lift and also to Val d Isere and over to the Borsat chair lift. So this has a lot of access from staying in this area.

The first trails that loop back to Val Claret mentioned above too as Tufs and Tovieve gondola top station are the same. So gun powder, Funky Tuf and Kangooride.

Borsat chairlift
Which is called Bellevarde on the park map and counted as part of Val d'Isere area. This is another chairlift where your bike is loaded for you.  These trails take you to Val d'Isere
  • Purple Very bike trip - Epic black one of my favourites long techy with some climbs but views to kill for totally Instagram territory.
  • Blue Blue Lagoon -  nice long flowy bermy blue links into Val blue

Trails which take you to Val Claret
  • Green Bollinette -fast and flowy
  • Blue Tarentaise - Steep-sided blue trail
  • Red might be a blue Fresse Tagada - tight berms like gunpowder.
  • Black Scarefresse - has a massive drop to start

Val d'Isere

Olympique gondola

This is the far the biggest gondola it has space for a few bikes and bikers and has a bike mount on the floor. I do not recommend using these unless you want a mechanical. The trails from here are some of the longest in the park.

The trails from here take you back to this gondola
  • Green Popeye is the easiest and beginner-friendly trail nice and long at 13km
  • Blue Val blue 8.6km of fun fast trails with options of jumps but super chill.
  • Red Fast wood accessed via Val blue start this has nice drops and jumps 6km
  • Red Tabasco more natural in nature
  • Purple Rock n Ride Awesome super rocky trail very different in nature to others.
  • Black Bellev'hard was closed when we were there

So that is all the biking in Tignes and a quick overview of the trails. I will be putting up a few Youtube videos on Tignes and you can follow me on Instagram for more biking stuff.

Another couple of insights about Tignes.

Bike shops
The biggest bike shop was in Bourg Saint Maurice called Labo. There are Intersports through all the villages in Tignes. Not a whole lot of options for kit but enough that should get you through. You will defo be able to pick tyres etc but I would stock up in brake pads especially if you run Hopes Techs like me. I mean why wouldnt you, they are the best brakes. I only found one store that had Hope items and no brake pads when I was there. So pack spares.

Food
Restaurants and food shopping here are expensive. This is something to bear in mind. It is more expensive than other areas of France I have stayed. If you want a large supermarket stop in Bourg Saint Maurice on your way. We went to the Super U but there is a lot in this area. The biggest bike shop was in Bourg Saint Maurice called Labo.

Best crepes
I sampled a few but the best I found
Val Claret - Creperie Le Planté de Baton sweet savoury just all amazing
Tignes La lac - The Break which is located beside the Palafour chairlift.
also Croq Burger super lovely service here and good prices.

Waffle/ Ice cream Val Claret
Really good place just past the sherpa supermarket but I can't find the name. They make waffles and ice cream with handmade waffle cones.

Pizza
Takeaway. There are two SOS Pizza in Val Claret and one in La Lac great pizza both are really good takeaway pizzas.

Restaurant Brasserie du Petit Savoyard is expensive but nice food and great service.

Bakery
Rogers run by brits good bakery for your pastry fix.

Mid Trail lunch
Le Trifollet This one is located halfway down Val blue. Excellent for hotdog and beer and a lovely view. There are signs on the trail which say the snack bar is worth a stop for sure.

I hope you have enjoyed this little round-up of a trip to Tignes If you have any questions I can help with please do let me know either here or over Instagram.

Review of Oakley RADAR EV XS PATH YOUTH FIT and RADAR EV PATH For MTB

Today we are talking glasses for riding. I have tried quite a few options over the years and I am currently an Oakley fan and I always get asked what glasses I wear and why I like them. So today I thought I would share it all with you.

Why

I wear glasses on every ride. My local trails are in Fort William. I know How lucky am I? One of the tricky and most fun parts of Scottish riding is the weather. The weather here can change in an instant. More often than not the trails are muddy and steep. You are more mud covered than anything else on a wet day here. Well, let's face it your get mud even on the dryest days up here. So stopping mud from getting in your eye is paramount to any good ride. I have just been upgraded to a Mudhugger. (full post on that to come) Which helps so much too. But protecting your eyes when out on the trails is so important.

A little horror story. We have all had that debilitating moment when mud splashes in our eye and you stop dead. Yes, that is awful. But one day I was on a nice easy blue trail when a stone flicked up and smashed the lenses of the cheap glasses I was wearing. Without them, I would have had a big stone to my eye socket. So I am glad I wear eye protection when rideing.

Which glasses I wear

My glasses of choice Oakley RADAR® EV PATH. I have been wearing a Tour De France version I was gifted for years. and I have always loved them but if I am completely honest they have never fitted me right. I am a woman with a small face. I have in the past had to wear youth helmets before the market caught up and made better female-specific helmets.

So why the Oakley radar

Oakley has broken the mould with these glasses. I mean you know they are good by the sheer amount of world-class athletes that choose these on the daily. Yes, I know some are paid by Oakley but you have to admit it is a very cool brand. Oakley has put decades of research into there product and by all accounts actually listen to and use their athletes in testing.

The Radar has a new taller lens and an extended range of view in the upper peripheral region. The frames are lightweight. You can change out the lenses. There is a huge range of differnt type and style of lenses covering every condition you can ride in. You have the Prizm lenses range which even enhances colour and contrast for a better experience.  The lens performance shield lens technology with HDO. You have the choice of polarized or Iridium lenses. You can swap out the earsocks and nose pads and you can even get them with prescription lenses. I personally love the way the lense have air vents cut into the top of them. This making them fog up less or not even at all. They are the best I have had for not fogging up and the lenses seem to last a lot longer than cheaper versions of glasses.

One of the unrivalled things about Oakley is lense impact protection. The lenses have been designed and tested under extreme high mass and high-velocity circomstances to ensure they can withstand the most extreme circumstances. As you can imagine we can have some high impact crashes in our sport so knowing your glasses have been tested to the max is reassuring.

The Difference in sizes.

Today I thought I would show you the difference between the Oakley RADAR EV path and Oakley RADAR® EV XS PATH® (YOUTH FIT). I just ordered a pair of each and You will be shocked by the differance I know I was. I will try to do the side by side. So they Normal ones are the white ones with clear lense and the youth are the ones with the blue socks.

From this view, you can really see the size differance in the frames and lenses.

For once my birthmark comes in handy. You can really see the differance in the face coverage. If you look at my birthmark.

You can see from the side my sides the bigger version really takes over my face and the youth fits me a lot better. I am an Extra small/ small in helmets. That should tell you have pea headed I am. If like me you fancy some Oakleys and you are unsure of the sizes. I really hope this helps. I wish I could have found something like this when I was looking for a buy. I would mention the youth version has less option which is a bit sad. I would love to see more option in this range or maybe a female-specific range we are in 2021 after all and there are a lot of us women out on the trail-shredding hard tracks.

I understand Oakley is an expensive brand. I totally get It. I too was a bit apprehensive about the cost but I have to say I am and have been delighted with my Oakley. I mean my last pair much be about four years old and the frames are still going strong. I just wanted to try the youth version if not I would still be wearing them. If you are a member of the blue light club you can get a really good discount on Oakley so that is a little tip. The blue light card is for emergency services. If you are not Oakley have a decent sale on at the moment so It might be worth checking it out and grab a bargain.

Valentines gift guide for mountain bikers and cyclists.

Well, it's almost Valentine Day. You know that day of the year where you show your other half how much you love them. Well, that is how it goes, isn't it?   Not everyone celebrates Valentine's day and I totally get that but for those of us that do it is a tricky one isn't it especially if your other half is a mountain biker or cyclist like you are. I am not saying that the traditional gift of flowers, chocolate and aftershave is without merit but I know I prefer a thoughtful mtb gift.

Today I wanted to make a list of gifts for the cyclist in your life. After the huge success of my Christmas guide. I honestly can not thank you all enough for all the sharing and caring you all did. To say I was overwhelmed watching the views go up was an understatement. It did show me that us mountain bikers are hard to buy for so there is a need for a quick and easy gift guide. Again I will try to focus on littler brands where I can because let's give our support to the little brands too. Some of these items will have been featured in my Christmas guide.

Brakes and components

Hope Technology. Full discloser I am a Hope ambassador. But I have also been a Hope lover for many years. I actually got my first set of Hope Tech E4 brakes for a birthday a few years ago. I credit them to changing my riding for the better I am not exaggerating. Hope products just hit differently. I fully recommend if you are going to buy one big item from Hope to start your love affair with you need their brakes. They are ride changing. I will write a full post on these brakes. Hope also has a collaboration with endura if you need kit it is insane. I can recommend the clothing and of course, if you need any components you need to check out Hope Technology. I promise no one would be disappointed with a Hope item this valentine day

Mudguard

A mudhugger is the perfect gift. Mudhugger does a huge range of options in mudguards and accessories. I have the brand new Evo bolt-on version on my bike. The mudguards are customisable too you can buy decals for your Mudhugger so it can match the bike you are buying for. They have won numerous awards and they really are awesome for this time of year. Plus they are made from recycled plastics.  You may have seen on my Instagram I am now an ambassador for this incredible British brand.  I will be doing a full post on my Mudhugger soon but huge spoiler It is amazing and there is no more mud in my eye! You need one.

Bike protection

Rimpact is also known as the things that save your wheels. I have tyre inserts in all my bikes they are worth there money ten times over. Especially with the type of riding I do. I would not be without tyre inserts.

What the brand says

"There is more to a good tyre insert than meets the eye. We learned this the hard way, buying some off the shelf foam, shaping it and proceeding to wreck our wheels. We've tested prototypes, learned, redesigned and tested again. And again. And again. The result is two high-performance products that are unique in providing an improvement in performance without any of the drawbacks tyre inserts from other brands cause"

Tyres

Tyres are always a fantastic gift. I know I would be delighted with new tyres. I like the look of these Michelin Wild Enduro Magi-X Tyre. Michelin offers a fantastic range of Mtb tyres and their mud tyres would be perfect for the conditions right now here in the Highlands. The gift of grip is an awesome option. Just make sure you order the right size for your other half bike or order the size of your own bike by accident. I mean accidents happen right?

What the brand says

The tread pattern is optimised for front wheel use with a block design that provides more progression, terrain versatility and maximum braking grip. This 2.4 inch wide tyre utilises a Magi-X2 compound, a new generation of top performance rubber providing maximum braking and cornering grip in all conditions and temperatures, even at very high speeds.

The Wild Enduro tyre also offers excellent levels of protection thanks to the strong but lightweight "Gravity Shield" 3x60 TPI casing designed for rear-mounted Enduro riding. This new-generation casing design with high-density reinforcements provides exceptional levels of durability and has been approved by Enduro World Series riders

Every biker needs some goggle and these are Melon. I haven't tried these ones myself but one of my best friends loves them. He swears by them and that recommendation is good enough for me. This is another small brand. I love that with melon you are in full control of your goggles. Everything is customisable. Phone and GoPro accessories

Using a GoPro is becoming common place. So with this, you need to mount it somehow to yourself or your bike. Enter Snap mounts for your GoPro. These are gaining popularity in the MTB community. They look super clever and an interesting way to mount your GoPro instead of the normal harness. I have these on order and will do a review of these soon but they look amazing

What the brand says
"The versatile, two part magnetic GoPro action camera mount that allows you to mount your GoPro and DJI Osmo Action to any material less than 1/4″ as well as most metallic surfaces. Compatible with GoPro Hero 9 also the GoPro Hero 3/4/5/6/7/8 and Session 4/5. Two part, magnetic compression design allows for quick and easy attachment to shirts, jackets, backpacks, windows or any ferrous metal surface."
Next up a recommendation from my other half. Quad lock phone cases. My husband has had this for ages and swears by it. It uses it on his bike and in the car for mounting his phone. He uses it more on his road bike and Zwift than on his MTB but this does look really good. The case it really protective too.

What the brand says
"Quad Lock® is the strongest and most secure mounting system in the UK that integrates your smartphone into an active lifestyle. The unique approach of integrating the mounting interface into a slim and durable everyday case allows the Quad Lock® mounts to be much smaller than any other mount on the market."

Speaking of GoPro if you have the Hero 9 like me. I would highly recommend the HERO9 Black Max Lens Mod This lens if GoPro video life-changing. It is incredible. This will be getting its own review but if you own a GoPro you need to invest in this lens before you buy anything else. It is a game change

Ducks

Well, isn't this the cutest little thing! This is a bike duck. I have to say I had never heard of these but apparently, they have a bit of cult following. I would like to thank the admins of a woman's MTB group I am part of for this entry. To be honestly they helped a lot with this guide. So thank you, lovely ladies. But how friking adorable is this little fellow. No more lonely solo spins when you have your Bike duck. They come in a range of styles and they are lights and bell and under £4. I mean how can you not order one?

Books

Bikepacking: Mountain Bike Camping Adventures on the Wild Trails of Britain (Mountain Bike Adventures) This book is for the adventurer who wants to hit the trails bike packing. This has come highly recommended to me. You just need to take a look at the reviews on Amazon to know this is a winner.

I have this book sat beside me to read and it looks incredible. Making it the perfect gift.

What the author says
It’s time we celebrated women in adventure

"What does "toughness" mean to you? Perhaps it’s being physically fit and mentally resilient. Perhaps it’s doing something no one else has done before. Perhaps it’s breaking down boundaries and proving what you can do, in spite of the naysayers. Perhaps it’s travelling alone, immersing yourself in new cultures and meeting new people. Perhaps it’s running ultramarathons in the blistering heat and beating the competition. Perhaps it’s conquering your fears.

The badass adventurers in this collection are all fearless, intelligent, compassionate and curious about the world – and they all happen to be female. From endurance obstacle races to arctic expeditions, from mountain climbing to wingsuit flying, from horse trekking to swimming the English Channel, they have set the bar high for what women are capable of. Let yourself be inspired by their stories of grit, courage, determination, triumph and heartbreak – you never know, it might lead to something incredible!"

The little helpful bits you don't think about.

These are hands down the best tyre Levers they are the Pedros Pink Tyre Levers (Pair). You can get other colours If pink is not your style. What I will say is the pink ones are the cheapest. This clip together you don't lose them and you can fit them in your pocket or bag.

What the brand says
"Ergonomic shape is easier to remove tyres rather than standard levers. Made from strong, durable plastic, that won't bend and break. Ideal for difficult tight-fitting tyres"

Next up we have Spokey Pro . This is the best spoke wrench we have ever owned. I have managed to find these in a UK store for you as we have actually ordered them from the USA.

What the brand says

"Professional standard spoke wrench in a classic design.
Comfortable to use with its large round shape.
Brightly coloured and easy to find in your tool box.
Two alloy inserts grip the maximum surface area on all four sides of the nipples surface.
Perfect for use with alloy and coloured nipples.
Fits US and Euro spoke sizes (3.25mm)."

Art
I would be doing an injustice if I didn't mention to you all that my lovely friend and fellow biker Emma Milford does the most amazing painting and is taking commissions at the moment. She so talented and her art funds her van life adventures. Why not give the most special gift this valentine of a one of a kind painting and get major brownie points from your other half.

Trail dog
I would be doing an injustice if I didn't mention The trail dogs right? I mean they need to be shown love too at valentines.

Here we have a fantastic Scottish brand.  Bark and Ride they Based not too far away from me in Aviemore. If you are looking to treat that faithful trail companion why not take a look at Bark and rides products.
